Dr. Merritt was born in Oklahoma City and lived in both Oklahoma and Missouri as a child. After graduating high school in Oklahoma City, he attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Once he completed his undergraduate degree he attended Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Washington University- Barnes Hospital. He practiced and taught at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita for eleven years before returning to Oklahoma City. He has been in private practice in Oklahoma City, with some intermittent teaching responsibilities, since 1985.
Dr. Merritt has served as a consultant in gynecology and obstetrics to the U. S. Veterans Administration, the Strategic Air Command and U.S. Airforce. He was medical director for the Sooner Health Plan, PPO, Wellcor American and HMO when these were owned and operated by Integris, Deaconess and Mercy Hospitals, among others. He has served several terms as chairman of the Obstetrics-Gynecology and Pediatrics department at Deaconess Hospital.
Dr. Merritt has a special interest in the investigation and treatment of recurring and hard to cure vaginal infections, evaluation and treatment of pelvic pain and abnormal vaginal bleeding.
